PASIGHAT, Jan 4: Pasighat East MLA Kaling Moyong today inaugurated a two-day Kisan Mela on the theme 'Innovations in Potato Farming to Empower Tribal Farmers in the North Eastern Region of India', being organized by the College of Agriculture in collaboration with the College of Horticulture & Forestry and Krishi Vigyan Kendra in the premises of Agriculture College, Pasighat.
Soon after the inauguration, Moyong while addressing the gathering of farmers and agriculturists, stated that Arunachal Pradesh having the largest land bank in the Northeast has a lot of potential in the agriculture, horticulture and its allied sectors and the same needs to be leveraged and the benefits passed on to the farmers.
He observed that the two-day assembly of farmers, entrepreneurs, experts would help in developing linkages between various stakeholders to benefit the farming community. Underscoring that agriculture and farmers remain the top priority of the governments, the MLA asserted that an enabling environment has been created for transforming Agri & Allied Sectors in order to increase farmer income,
ensure food security and economic growth. The two-day Kisan Mela would showcase and deliberate upon the theme of diversification in agriculture which was not only important for assured income to our farming community but also in making agriculture systems more sustainable in the future, added Moyong.
Appreciating for formulating a future strategy for small and medium-sized farms to get more profitable markets with reduced cost of farm inputs, the MLA opined that Agri & Horti colleges at Pasighat were making strides in every field and features in national headlines for its
unprecedented achievements. KVKs were conducting quality research and ensuring extension services. The union and state governments have assured for all possible cooperation and support in agri-horti business innovations to create employment and also provided appropriate insurance policies to strengthen the morale of the growers, said MLA Moyong.
Earlier, the Dean of College of Agriculture, Pasighat Dr. AK Tripathi stated that their integrated approach with the focus on efficient use of bio-resources for food, feed and industry will be able to tackle challenges arising out of globalization and climate change. All in the field are determined to transform subsistence agriculture into sustainable commercial agriculture economy with emphasis on ecosystem services and restoration & sustainable utilization of biodiversity, Tripathi added.
Dr. BN Hazarika, Dean of College of Horticulture, Pasighat in his brief address threw light on the ways and strategy for holistic development of Hori-Agri and allied sector and transforming the lives of farmers with skill development and other dedicated initiatives.
Among others, Registrar of Central Agricultural University, Imphal Dr. K. Mamocha Singh, faculties Dr. Gireesh Chand and Dr. SK Bandyopadhyay also spoke on the occasion. Many progressive farmers were awarded by the dignitaries on the occasion.
The Union Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Narendra Singh Tomar will formally inaugurate the administrative and academic buildings and hostels of the Pasighat Agriculture College in presence of the state’s Chief Minister Pema Khandu, Union Law & Justice Minister Kiren Rijiju, State Agriculture and Horticulture Minister Tage Taki, Loksabha MP Tapir Gao and others.
