RUKSIN, 1 Sep: Celebration of Solung, the main festival of the Adi tribe, began in different villages of East Siang district on Monday with participation of government officials and eminent dignitaries.
The festivities began in the morning with the hoisting of the Solung flag and ritual offerings to goddess Kiine Naane for a bumper harvest and wellbeing of the domestic animals.
The village-level Solung celebration committees have invited Solung miriis (priests) from different parts of the Adi belt to perform 3-day rituals and lead the womenfolk in narrating the Solung aabang (rhapsody).
Attending the festive celebration at Debing village (Ruksin) in East Siang, EE of Yingking division PHED, Oling Taloh urged the youths to shoulder the responsibility of preserving their ancestral cultures for the future generations. He said traditional customs of the tribals should not mix with religion because the living tradition carries ethnic identity and evolution of civilization of the tribal groups.
Taloh, who expressed his concern over drug abuse among growing youths of the community, appealed to elite sections to unite and fight against drug addiction. He supported the cultural exchange event organized by Adi-Mising Bane Kebang every year and hoped that it would strengthen the bond between the two tribes belonging to Abotani group.
Addressing the occasion, Pasighat division RWD Executive Engineer Jorshing Moyong said “Solung is not only a harvest festival of the Adis, but also an occasion to worship the souls of their forefathers and deities for survival of the community people.
Patron (irging) of the solung festival Kaling Moyong highlighted the mythology, while Debing head burah Yon Yomso offered rituals for the well-being of the community members.
